These budgets are created each fiscal year. A master budget covers all departments across the company.A static budget remains unchanged even if there are changes to parts of the business, like sales levels. Building a static budget, which is completed by department and looks at fixed expenses, is often the first step in the budgeting process. There are five types of budgets a company typically produces in order to run the business. Budgets are re-evaluated and re-adjusted on a periodic basis-in most cases on a quarterly basis. The budget estimates your company’s revenue and expenses for that period. Budgets allocate funds, while forecasting is a tool used to make those allocations.īudgeting is the process of making a plan for how you will spend your business’s money over a given period (month, quarter, year, etc.).Forecasting looks at the budget targets and brings in past information, along with market and industry analysis, to predict whether the anticipated target will be achieved.Budgets keep companies on track by laying out spending parameters and allowing for the comparison of anticipated results to actual ones.Budgeting is the map, and forecasting provides the tools to make adjustments in how you get to your destination. To use the common analogy that the budget is a map, taken together, forecasting and budgeting are sort of like Waze or any map application on your phone. While a budget details expected future results, a forecast focuses on probable future events to inform whether a company will hit the targets set in a budget. Forecasting increases the confidence of the management team to make important business decisions.īudget setting and financial forecasting have unique purposes, but they work best together. At its simplest, a budget lists fixed and variable expenses and determines how to allocate the money coming into the business.Ī forecast uses historical and current transactional data, along with industry and market information, to help determine how to allocate budgets for anticipated expenses for a future period of time. East, Nordics and Other Regions (opens in new tab)Ī budget estimates how much money your business will earn and how much it’ll spend over a specific period.

"When we finished editing all of the scenes of the child Dren, at the same time that we brought Delphine back for reference, we did what we called Eye ADR. Not surprisingly, the child's eyes were the biggest challenge, and it was Bradley's suggestion to once again rely on Chanéac. We had her wearing a prosthetic built by KNB for lighting reference." "We had to blend skin tones right in the middle of her face and make it work," Munroe continues. The child Dren, though, offered the most complex challenge since most of her face is CG. Munroe credits CG Supervisor Terry Bradley with devising the techniques for pulling off the different Drens. And Delphine worked with Abigail Chu, who plays the child Dru, for a couple of weeks helping her understand how her performance was going to come across on screen to support the evolution of Dren: The fact that the eyes are on the side of her head, how she could tilt her head to one side to look straight ahead the recoiling action when she gets scared or the aggressive action when she gets angry." "She came back from Paris to Toronto after we wrapped and I videotaped her in a small studio acting out the baby and toddler Dren actions for the benefit of the animators, even though they were all-CG characters. She informed the character at every stage of its evolution," he explains. "The reason we could not have made this 10 years ago is because we didn't have Delphine Chanéac. Munroe suggests that a test was made 10 years ago, but it wasn't technology that held them back. did the bulk of the animation in Toronto using Houdini, with Paris-based Buf Compagnie and Mac Guff Ligne animating Dren as a baby/ toddler and the pre-Dren slugs, Fred and Ginger, respectively. And the way we supported that from a visual effects standpoint was to constantly make things as subtle as possible."Ĭ.O.R.E. The look of Dren is - the bald head, the eyes slightly far apart and slanted, only three fingers and a thumb on each hand, a tail that only moves when necessary to conserve energy. "I think what was after from day one was a sympathetic character that didn't draw attention to itself as a monster, but as a creation of two monsters. Thankfully, we had a lot of great creature designers, especially Amro Attia. He admits that Dren (nerd spelled backwards) is the reason it took so long to make Splice: "Dren is complex and evolves very quickly from a little, hairless, bird-like, lizard creature to a very attractive, young female in almost no time. And we certainly can’t predict how investors will decide to price corporate cash flows at any given point in time out into the future.īut predicting future risk is fairly easy - markets will continue to fluctuate and experience losses on a regular basis. No one knows what the future holds for economic growth. No one can predict what the future returns will be in the market. They generally go up but not every day, week, month or year. This is why stocks are constantly playing mind games with us. It’s difficult to appreciate this fact when looking at a long-term log scale stock chart that seems to only go up and to the right. Over the last 90 years or so the market have been in a bear market almost one-quarter of the time. Here’s the further breakdown by the size of the loss: The majority of your time invested in stocks could be spent thinking about how you coulda, shoulda, woulda sold at that previous high price (which of course gets taken out to the upside eventually). I used monthly total returns on stocks for these numbers and found that an investor would have been down from a prior peak over 70% of the time. I don’t have data going back to 1835, but I was able to calculate the drawdowns on the S&P 500 going back to 1927 to add some more context to Frey’s chart from above: This makes sense when you consider that stocks are positive just a little over half the time when looking at returns on a daily basis, but it can be difficult to wrap your head around this fact. This means there are plenty of chances to be in a state of regret when investing in stocks. Stocks don’t make new highs every single day, so most of the time you’re going to be underwater from your portfolio’s high water mark. Losses are really the one constant across all cycles.įrey says in his talk that in stocks, “You’re usually in a drawdown state.” Obviously, the crash during the Great Depression stands out here, but look at how consistent losses have been over each and every decade or economic environment. Now here are those losses visualized in another way without the benefit of a log scale chart: First, here’s the long-term growth of the stock market with losses shaded in red: Frey presented a couple of different charts on the market to make his point. The natural follow-up question to this line of thinking would be - so what does stock market data going back to the 1800s really tell us?Ī reader sent me a link to a video of a presentation given by former hedge fund manager and quant Robert Frey (whose firm was actually bought out by legendary hedge fund manager Jim Simons in the 90s) called 180 Years of Market Drawdowns.įrey discusses the many changes that have taken place in the stock market over the years - the creation of the Fed, monetary policy, fiscal policy, the end of the gold standard, tax rates, valuations, the industry make-up of the markets and a number of other things.īut there has been one constant going back all the way to the early 1800s - risk. Namely that you have to take market returns that go back to the turn of the 20th century with a grain of salt because of the fact that costs were much higher in those days so no one was really receiving those gross returns on a net basis. “We tend to be inadequate historians.” – Robert FreyĪ couple weeks ago I covered a little discussed topic involving the use of historical market data. “This year, due to COVID-19 restrictions, (tonight’s) ceremony will be abbreviated and without the traditional public audience,” Litchfield said. The ceremony will be livestreamed on the police department’s Facebook page instead. But this year’s ceremony is closed to the general public because of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, said Andrea Litchfield, a spokeswoman for the Hilliard Division of Police. Todd Beamer’s name is on the granite wall at Hilliard’s First Responders Park, where the city will stage its annual memorial at 7 p.m. The 32-year-old father of two sons - and whose wife, Lisa, was pregnant with their third child - was among the four passengers who organized other passengers to retake the plane from the hijackers, ultimately causing its crash in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, about 20 minutes away from the its likely intended target, believed to be the U.S. Todd Beamer was among the passengers on the fourth airline - United Airlines Flight 93 en route from Newark, New Jersey, to San Francisco. 11, 2001, when 19 terrorists hijacked four airlines, crashing two into the World Trade Center towers, one into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and the fourth into a barren field about 60 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. His only son, Todd Beamer, was among the 2,977 people killed Sept. Burnett Jr., Georgine Rose Corrigan, Jason Dahl, Edward Porter Felt, Andrew Garcia, Jeremy Glick, Lauren Grandcolas, Donald Greene, Richard Guadagno, Leroy Homer Jr., CeeCee Lyles, Nicole Carole Miller, Christine Snyder, and all other people who lost their lives on this tragic day.David Beamer can find blessings in places where they aren’t readily apparent. In memory of: Todd Beamer, Alan Beaven, Mark Bingham, Deora Bodley, Sandy Bradshaw, Thomas E. One thing is for sure, it takes pride and courage to do what they did, and in my mind they are some of the greatest heroes to ever live! Many people wonder what it would have been like if these brave men did not do what they had done. And he would not let other people overpower him," his wife said. He would have had his family in the forefront of his thoughts. Todd Beamer is a great and heroic leader along with the other passengers who risked their lives for our country. and officials say that the plane crashed at 9:58 A.M. Lisa Jefferson hung up the phone at 10:00 A.M. It was going about four hundred miles per hour when it hit the ground. The plane "disintegrated" right when it hit the ground. Before the attack on the three hijackers, Todd's last words that Lisa heard were: "Are you guys ready? Let's roll!" All of the men then put all of their hearts and strength into trying to regain control of the plane.Īt the last minute the hijacker controlling the plane drove it straight into the ground in an open farm field about ten minutes away from the White House in Pennsylvania. Todd got together with the other men and came up with a plan to try and take back control of the plane. They said it together, and it got him thinking. He then asked Lisa if she would pray the Lord's Prayer with him. About nine minutes into the call Todd yelled, "Oh! We're going down!" They quickly regained position at a steady rate and he knew that they had to do something or else the Capitol was going to be hit. While in conversation, Todd told Lisa what was happening and that whatever happened to call his wife and their two sons. Todd Beamer called from an onboard telephone to a GTE (General Telephones and Electronics) operator. The other passenger tried in advance to stop the nonsense, but was stabbed to death. Thirty-seven of the passengers had been forced to move to the back of the plane. The other hijacker stood on guard with what seemed like a bomb strapped to his stomach. Two out of the three hijackers stayed in the cockpit trying to control the flight. About forty-five minutes to an hour into the flight three hijackers stood up and claimed control of the plane. There were thirty-eight passengers who boarded a plane heading to San Francisco that morning not knowing what was coming of them. Unfortunately, the morning soon turned bad. The morning of September 11, 2001, was a beautiful day without a cloud in the sky. This day soon became a historic event that started a war that has yet to end. "Are you guys ready? Let's roll!" commanded Todd Beamer, a 32 year old man who on September 11, 2001, lead an assault against three hijackers on Flight United 93. Even if Harvard discriminates against Asian Americans, the prospects for winning this claim were always dim. Metropolitan Housing Development Corporation (1977), and Personnel Administrator v. Davis (1976), Village of Arlington Heights v. Doing so is very difficult and implicates a line of Supreme Court cases, including Washington v. As our numbers increased at selective schools, some White students and administrators viewed Asian Americans as overly competitive and feared that elite campuses would look “too foreign.” Harvard denies intentionally engaging in such discrimination thus the burden fell on SFFA to prove it. For the Harvard case, SFFA uses a bait-and-switch strategy with Asian Americans as plaintiffs by deliberately conflating two distinct concepts: “negative action” and affirmative action.Īlthough Asian Americans are well represented at Harvard, SFFA contends that the university wants to limit our enrollment. That is why SFFA brought the current lawsuits. The Fisher cases resulted in the Supreme Court upholding affirmative action, and Blum even expressed disappointment in the Fisher ruling. ” But SFFA founder Edward Blum, a longtime foe of affirmative action, himself orchestrated the litigation in Fisher v. I still have a small supply of the Aussie subs which are in the white packet then later a blue box, the USA made ammo comes in a plastic container with the slide lid. I bought a box the other day to compare the two and thought I would post up the results here so here we go. Australian made Winchester 40 gr subsonic is no longer being made but American Win 40gr sub is available.īy all accounts and reading about the American ammo it appears to be suffering from a bit of quality control and most people are complaining that it doesn't compare with the old Aussie round. Use Shoot! ballistics app/software to search our ammo database of over 100 rimfire loads to do 22 ballistics. With all the ammo shortages these days its hard to get the ammo you want sometimes. Our 22 ballistics demonstration above using Shoot! ballistics software and actual firing at the gun range or while The little 22 LR firing lead bullets of between 35-40grs in weight and around 1250-1350fps appears to be the ideal in terms of accuracy, power and flat trajectory. Beyond this range the little 22LR starts to run out of steam and bullet drop and energy taper off rapidly. The downrange energy and trajectory of a typical standard rimfire round make it suitable to consistently hit small sized targets, under ideal conditions, to about 140 yards. Subsonic bullets from a rimfire are ideal for close quarter pest control situations. The heavier 22 bullets also deliver increased downrange energy so vital for a clean kill on small game.Ī subsonic 22 LR round has its application in close range shooting (50 yards maximum) where noise could be a problem (i.e. This is why I choose to shoot standard velocity rounds firing a 38 or 40gr bullet. So for me pinpoint accuracy is more important in a 22 rimfire than velocity. I want that small round nosed or hollow point lead bullet to hit precisely where I’m aiming for a clean, humane kill. I’ve never found them to be as accurate as standard velocity rimfire rounds (as I define above in the 1250fps velocity range).Īccuracy is a big factor when shooting a 22 rimfire, especially when hunting small game. Over the years I’ve shot many different 22 LR hyper velocity rounds in a range of rimfire firearms. Personal Experience with 22 LR Hyper velocity rounds They perform just right across the ranges you typically shoot a rimfire. But when it comes to velocity (therefore higher energy) and wind deflection the ballistics of the other rimfire rounds are ideal. The hyper velocity round shoots flatter out to 100 yards, beating the other 2 rounds, but at a price (accuracy usually suffers – read below to learn more). The lesson here for shooters wanting to understand 22 ballistics is that high velocity usually does not equal better downrange ballistics performance. The standard rimfire round is between the two velocity extremes. The hyper velocity round is affected the most ( 1.09 inches drift off the bullseye at 50 yards) while the subsonic round is least deflected by crosswinds at this range ( only 0.62 inches). This shows the bullet drift at 50 yards with a 5mph crosswind coming from the East (3 o’clock). Look at the column named ‘Deflection(Inches)’. The Standard round lost only 134fps while the subsonic 85fps. Notice how much velocity the hyper velocity 22 round has lost at 50 yards compared to the standard and subsonic rounds – over 340fps! The other rimfire rounds lost far less velocity. The 22 LR is ideal for teaching novice or beginner firearm owners the basics of exterior ballistics and how to consistently hit targets beyond their usual shooting distance.Īmmunition is inexpensive so you can practice all day at the gun range. Why Understanding 22 Ballistics is Important Understanding 22 Ballistics (22 Long rifle – 5.6x15mmR) whether you shoot hyper velocity, subsonic or standard 22 ammunition (around 1250fps) is essential if you want to hit small targets beyond 100 yards. Several of the NPCs you meet during (and even fight) during your quest are available to romance, offering up rewards if you put in the effort. Fighting your way out of the underworld seems like it’d leave little time for dalliances of the heart, yet Hades has a selection of romance option to play with. He wants his grandkids hunting turkeys, bowling without bumpers, and approaching crushes in a way that constitutes sexual harassment. He likes to get the two arguing, and then saying “Are you going to take that?” He also thinks they’re too soft in their approach to parenting, and that Dusty especially needs to be more hard-nosed. He thinks that the best way to solve any conflict is to fight, so he serves as an instigator at every opportunity. In short, Kurt gets the feud between Brad and Dusty going again. Since the movie promises to be about daddies, the majority of the screen time goes to Brad, Dusty, Don, and Kurt. John Lithgow is Brad’s dorky dad Don and Mel Gibson is Dusty’s estranged father Kurt. Four kids, five parents, and for this movie we’re adding two grandparents. Dusty is stepdad to a girl that his new wife Karen (Alessandra Ambrosio) had with Roger (John Cena). Just a quick recap on the families: Brad (Ferrell) and Sarah (Linda Cardellini) have one son of their own, and Brad is stepdad to Sarah’s son and daughter that she had with Dusty (Wahlberg). As it stands, this movie is a Madea Halloween away from being the worst movie of 2017. “Daddy’s Home 2” is somehow even worse, making me appreciate the few things the original did right that this one lacks. Because that movie had a cushy holiday opening, it made enough money to warrant a sequel. I took two hours out of my Christmas Day to cringe through an obnoxious feud between a doting stepdad (Will Ferrell) and an underactive biological father (Mark Wahlberg) over the love of their shared kids. Yet, considering it’s a family-friendly movie, the director should have done away with its bad morals, such as parents unresponsibly leaving alcohol in their child’s reach and not punishing them for drinking underage.“Daddy’s Home” was one of the worst movies of 2015. The awkward moments in the movie were extended way beyond what they needed to be in the signature Ferrell way. I found myself openly laughing in the theater at the stupidity of some joke, and Ferrell’s ability to withstand every possible injury and even death. “Daddy’s Home 2” manages to do one thing right, and that is family fun humor. If you are looking for a great Christmas movie starring actor Will Ferrell, please check out “Elf.” And suddenly all of the actors, possibly angry for not being cast in the new “Pitch Perfect” movie, start singing in perfect harmony. At this point, all of the actors decide to break the fourth wall.įerrell makes a speech about moviegoers coming together, obviously referring to the people watching the movie. The movie goes as far as to have a Christmas miracle at the end which takes place in a movie theater the snow storm ends as the family conflict is resolved. Christmas was the main focus of the movie, which constantly made me wonder whether the movie studio knew what month they was releasing the movie in. The most unbearable part of the movie was its Christmas cheer. Since the conflict is not resolved, it feels as if the movie is promoting shoplifting. The conflict is supposedly resolved after Wahlberg says, “We’re working on it,” and is never mentioned again. In one scene, the movie reveals that Karen (Alessandra Ambrosio), Wahlberg’s wife, is a shoplifter. The sequel focuses a little too much on the “daddies,” leaving the “mommies” with little to no character development. The message of the story is almost identical to the first movie, leaving veteran moviegoers groaning in their seats at every major plot point. If four dads were not enough, Roger, played by John Cena, also makes an appearance in the movie as the dad of Lithgow’s daughter.Īs with many of Ferrell’s movies, the plot suffers in relationship to the humor. Writers Brian Burns and Sean Anders clearly have some daddy issues. The two dads decide to spend Christmas together and invite their own fathers, Kurt and Don (Mel Gibson and John Lithgow) to join in the festivities. The movie picks up a year after the first movie, “Daddy’s Home,” when “Step-daddy” Brad (Will Ferrell) and “Daddy” Dusty (Mark Wahlberg) have decided to become co-dads and best friends. 10 - a month before Christmas - but full of Christmas cheer.īesides their release date hiccup, the movie could have been much better if it would have featured more of Will Ferrell’s staple childish humor. “Daddy’s Home 2” came to theaters on Nov.
